How it works
Letters in, one digit out
1. Letters become numbers
A letter chart gives every letter a value. The Pythagorean chart counts A to I as 1 to 9, then starts again, so J is 1 and R is 9, and S is 1 again up to Z at 8. A1Z26 simply uses the place in the alphabet, A = 1 up to Z = 26. The Chaldean chart is a fixed traditional list with its own values, and by tradition no letter in it is worth 9.
2. Add, then collapse
Add every value to get the total, then add the digits of the total, again and again, until one digit is left. That digit is the digital root of the total, the same as the remainder after dividing by 9, with 9 standing in for 0. Ada Lovelace adds up to 36 with the Pythagorean chart, and 3 + 6 = 9. 3. Why two lenses always agree
The Pythagorean value of a letter is its alphabet place with nines cast out. J is letter 10 and counts 1, S is letter 19 and counts 1, Z is letter 26 and counts 8. Taking away nines never changes a digital root, so the Pythagorean and A1Z26 totals always collapse to the same digit. Nikola Tesla is 38 one way and 119 the other, and both end on 2. Chaldean is not built this way, so it gives 8 for the same name.
4. Vowels and consonants
Numerology books often add the vowels and the consonants on their own as well. That split is a convention. This page counts A, E, I, O and U as vowels and treats Y as a consonant. Some books count Y as a vowel in some names, which would move the two numbers but not the whole name total.

What is my name number?

How are accents, hyphens and other characters handled?
Upper and lower case count the same, and accents are removed first, so é counts as e. Spaces, hyphens, apostrophes and digits are skipped. Any other character, such as a letter from a non-Latin script, is skipped too, and the page lists which ones it skipped.
Is my name sent anywhere?
No. The letters are added up in your browser, and the name is not uploaded or stored anywhere. It sits in the page address only so that Copy link can reopen the same result.
