The Oracle
Think of a number, scramble its digits, subtract the smaller from the bigger, hide one non-zero digit of the answer and type the rest: the oracle names the digit you hid, every time. The trick is pure arithmetic, because the answer is always a multiple of 9, so its digits must add up to a multiple of 9, and the missing digit is the one that makes the total come out right.

Keep it in your head or on paper. Don’t type it here. Something like 58231. Longer is fine.

Use every digit once, in any order. 58231 could become 13852.

Subtract the smaller number from the bigger one.

How did it know?
Your answer was a multiple of 9. That is certain: a number and any scramble of its digits leave the same remainder when you divide by 9, so the gap between them leaves none.
The digits of a multiple of 9 always add up to a multiple of 9. So the oracle adds up the digits you typed and finds how far the total is from the next multiple of 9. Here is your own sum:

Why the oracle always knows
1. A scramble keeps the same remainder
Dividing a number by 9 leaves the same remainder as adding up its digits and dividing that by 9. The digits of 58231 add up to 19, and 19 leaves 1, so 58231 leaves 1 too. Scramble it into 13852 and the digits still add up to 19, so it still leaves 1. Two numbers with the same remainder are a whole number of nines apart: 58231 − 13852 = 44379, which is 9 × 4931.
2. Multiples of 9 add up to multiples of 9
The digits of 44379 add up to 4 + 4 + 3 + 7 + 9 = 27, which is three nines. That holds for every multiple of 9, however long it is.
3. One digit missing
Keep the 7 secret and type 4439. The oracle adds 4 + 4 + 3 + 9 = 20. The next multiple of 9 is 27, which is 7 away, so the hidden digit is 7. As a rule: hidden digit = 9 − (sum of the typed digits mod 9), and when that remainder is 0 the hidden digit is 9.
4. Why the secret digit can’t be 0
Hide a 0 and the typed digits already add up to a multiple of 9, exactly as if you had hidden a 9. The oracle can’t tell the two apart, so it says 9. That is why step 4 asks for a digit that is not zero. Zeros you type are harmless, they add nothing.
Why 9, and not some other number
We count in tens, and ten is nine plus one. Every 10 is a 9 with 1 left over, every 100 is 99 with 1 left over, so each digit is worth its face value plus some nines. Throw the nines away and only the digit sum is left. That is the Lens from The 369 Rabbit Hole. In base 8, where eight is seven plus one, the same trick works with 7 instead of 9.
An old bookkeeper’s check
Adding digits and dropping nines is called casting out nines. For centuries, bookkeepers and students used it to check long sums by hand: if the digit sums don’t match, there is a mistake. It misses one kind of slip, two digits swapped, because a swap keeps the digit sum. That blind spot is exactly what the oracle uses.

How does the mind reading number trick work?
You think of a number, scramble its digits and subtract the smaller from the bigger. The answer is always a multiple of 9, so its digits add up to a multiple of 9. Why is the difference always a multiple of 9?
Every number leaves the same remainder after dividing by 9 as the sum of its digits does. A scramble has the same digits, so the same digit sum and the same remainder. Subtract two numbers with the same remainder and the remainders cancel, which leaves a multiple of 9.
Why can't the secret digit be zero?
Hiding a 0 and hiding a 9 leave the typed digits with the same kind of total, a multiple of 9. The oracle can't tell the two apart, so it says 9. Picking a non-zero digit removes the only case where it could be wrong.
The oracle got my digit wrong. What happened?
Almost always one of four things: a slip in the subtraction, a secret digit of 0, a scramble that added or dropped a digit, or a digit left out when typing. Check the subtraction with the scratch calculator in step 3 and try again.
Does the number need four digits?
The math works for any number with two or more digits. Four or more makes the answer longer, so there are more digits to type and the trick looks harder. If your answer has only one digit and it is not 0, it is 9.
Is the oracle reading my mind?
No. It only sees the digits you type and does one sum. The effect comes from how we write numbers: we count in tens, and ten is nine plus one. In base 8 the same trick works with 7, so there is nothing special about 9 beyond our ten fingers.
Can I do this trick without the page?
Yes. Ask a friend to do the steps and read out the digits they kept. Add them up, keep adding the digits of the total until one digit is left, and take that from 9. If you get 0, the hidden digit is 9.
